THE
CLEMI AT A GLANCE
The
Clemi (centre for liaison between teaching
and information media) is part of the French
Ministry of Education. It was created
in 1983 with the mission of "promoting
especially by means of training activities,
the multiple use of news media in teaching
with the aim of encouraging a better understanding
of the world by pupils while simultaneously
developing critical understanding." (Decree
of April 1993).
To achieve this mission, the Clemi offers
training sessions, educational programmes
and events, opportunities of exchange and
networking, and pedagogical publications.

Training teachers to a better knowledge of the news media
system, to the process of analysing and understanding
their messages and to their pedagogical use in the classroom.
Every year, the Clemi trains between 15.000 and 18.000
teachers in initial or
permanent training.
Putting in relation teachers and pupils with news
media professionals to build up common projects
and set up actions, punctually or during The
Press and Media Week at School in which 4 millions
pupils, 330.000 teachers and more than 1.000 media participate
in 2004.
Accompanying the expression
of pupils in the school context (newspapers, radio,
video, the Internet) to make them aware of the information
networks and favour their freedom and responsibility.
The Clemi owns and exploits the most important collection
of primary and secondary school newspapers in Europe (more
than 45.000 primary and secondary school newspapers).
Producing and distributing pedagogical tools in the form
of books, booklets and multimedia support. These publications
aim to encourage and develop, in the classrooms, works
and reflections about the news. It is a way of teaching
a wider audience than the one concerned by the training
sessions. Therefore, every year, four or five productions
are proposed to teachers.

Teams in the 30 regions

the role of council for the setting up of pedagogical
projects and the relation between media professionals
and teachers.
A documentation centre, specialised in the field of media-education,
that elaborates press files and carries out analysis on
topics related to the news.
An international network of correspondents on the topic
of media education, including the European Union, foreign
governmental organisations and non-governmental organisations.
The Clemi is coordinating the European programmes "Educaunet"
and "Media-educ".
A
vocational and proficiency Council works alongside
Clemi. Presided over a key person form the educational
or media area, it is composed of 63 key figures representing
